I’ve Let My Child Loose In The World

Will she survive or not?

Daughter number 3 has just reached the age where she moves from a primary school (lower school) to a secondary school (middle school), which means she goes for a 2 minute walk around the corner to the old school to a bus ride across the nearly 3 miles to the new school.

It’s just not practical for us to drive her there, as we’ve got work and two smaller ones who need to get to school on time, and frankly she needs to become more independent, so she’s on her own.

What I’ve noticed however is that some of the parents of her classmates have just NOT prepared for this change in responsibility and access to the wider world.

Some parents are driving their kids door-to-door because they don’t like the idea of the bus.

Some parents are driving their kids door-to-door because their child doesn’t get up early enough to get the bus.

Some parents are driving their kids door-to-door because they don’t like the idea of their child mixing with the great unwashed that are present in our town.

I think the issue that these parents have is that they have failed to prepare their child for this phase of their life.

Being a father of five girls definitely does not qualify me as an expert in parenting!
